The Brazilian Association of Higher Education Supporters (ABMES) has announced applications for ABMES Journalism Award to encourage the creation of reports and articles that address higher education in Brazil.
Founded in August 1982, the Brazilian Association of Higher Education Supporters (ABMES) represents entities that support private higher education throughout the national territory with the aim of engaging them in the most diverse instances and acting in the effective consolidation of their peers.
Objectives
- The ABMES Journalism Award aims to encourage the creation of reports and articles that address higher education in Brazil.
- The growth and improvement of specialized journalistic coverage helps to contribute to the search for permanent improvement and development of the country, generating social, political, economic and cultural benefits for all regions.
- The initiative also intends for the participating works to serve as a stimulus for an in-depth discussion of social programs and public policies linked to the sector.
- By debating these programs, which find fundamental partnerships in private institutions, ABMES reinforces the importance and social role of its members.
Categories and Awards
- The seventh edition of the ABMES Journalism Award will choose the best journalistic works produced addressing higher education, according to the work evaluation criteria described in item 8. 6 (six) cash prizes will be awarded, distributed in the following categories and awards:
- National Category: awards journalistic works with national coverage
- Written (printed and online) – R$ 16,000.00 (sixteen thousand reais);
- Video – R$ 16,000.00 (sixteen thousand reais);
- Audio – R$ 16,000.00 (sixteen thousand reais).
- Regional Category: awards journalistic works focusing on a specific region of the country
- Written (printed and online) – R$ 10,750.00 (ten thousand seven hundred and fifty reais);
- Video – R$ 10,750.00 (ten thousand seven hundred and fifty reais);
- Audio – R$ 10,750.00 (ten thousand seven hundred and fifty reais).
- National Category: awards journalistic works with national coverage
Reporting Topics
- Digital transformation in higher education;
- The Brazilian higher education evaluation system;
- Self-regulation and de-bureaucratization of the private higher education sector;
- The relationship between the development of private higher education and the economy of Brazil, states or municipalities;
- The growth and development of the private higher education market in the country;
- The fundamental role of academic research in private higher education institutions for the development of the country’s scientific and technological field;
- Public policies to encourage and promote access to private higher education
- The situation of government social programs, such as Fies, ProUni and Pronatec;
- Growth of EAD in higher education;
- Importance of internationalization for Brazilian higher education;
- Stories of overcoming challenges from people who achieved success through access to graduation;
- Cases in which higher education played a fundamental and transformative role (in social and economic aspects) not only in the lives of young people who had access to graduation, but also in communities, municipalities and states;
- Actions and initiatives to encourage good practices developed in Brazilian higher education;
- Valuing private higher education institutions as a reference in excellence and quality of professional training, resulting in professionals with visibility and prestige in the job market.
Assessment Criteria
- The content of the works entered for the ABMES Journalism Award follows the following evaluation criteria by the Examining Board. Failure to comply with any of the points will be grounds for disqualification of the entry:
- Technical journalistic property of investigation, writing, voiceover, image and editing;
- Social, political, economic and cultural contextualization of the agendas;
- Originality and creativity of the text and narrative of the report;
- Quality and diversification in the selection of sources and characters that, respectively, credit and illustrate the content and information presented in the report;
- Fluency and clarity in the development of subjects, including those of a technical nature, which raise the level of interpretation and understanding on the part of the intended audience;
- Capacity for repercussion, impact on different niches of stakeholders and the transformative and renewing potential that reporting can cause;
- Originality of the approach and differentiation of themes in the report;
- Adjustment of the contextualization of the subject matter;
- Reading, comparison and correct interpretation in the presentation of data, statistics and indicators presented by the sector, by official sources and different government bodies.
