Banco do Nordeste Award for Journalism in Brazil

The Banco do Nordeste Award for Journalism is promoted by Banco do Nordeste do Brasil SA and aims to enhance the visibility of actions capable of promoting regional development, with sustainability.

The award was created in 1980 and, until 1999, only awarded works published in print media. Resumed in 2003, it also started to reward photographic works published in print media and also electronic works on radio, TV and the internet. Starting with the 2016 edition, the project establishes the National Grand Prize, which selects the best entry, regardless of the media for which it was produced.

Award Categories

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​A total of R $300,000.00 (three hundred thousand reais) will be awarded in prizes grouped into four categories: national, state, extra-regional, university and a special prize for photography, by online voting by the public.
    • The special award for photography, with online voting by the public, will be called the JĂşlio Serra Photographic Award, in honor of the Banco do Nordeste employee who worked as a photographer for more than three decades, who died in 2023.
  • Works that wish to compete for the National Grand Prize with the theme “Renewable energies and their social, environmental and economic impacts” must select this option on the registration form. The work identified as competing for this award and which obtains the best score will receive R $38,000.00 (thirty-eight thousand reais).
  • In the National category, the following awards will also be granted:
    • National Text Award, worth R $15,000.00 (fifteen thousand reais): articles or journalistic reports prepared in text, published in printed or digital vehicles, compete;
    • National Photography Prize, worth R $14,000.00 (fourteen thousand reais): journalistic photographs published in printed or digital vehicles compete;
    • National Audio Prize, worth R $16,000.00 (sixteen thousand reais): audio journalistic articles or reports broadcast on radio or digital platforms compete;
    • National Audiovisual Award, worth R $23,000.00 (twenty-three thousand reais): audiovisual materials or journalistic reports, broadcast by TV stations or digital platforms, compete;
    • And National Multimedia Project Award, worth R $23,000.00 (twenty-three thousand reais): journalistic projects of a multimedia nature, published on websites, portals or other digital platforms, compete. Attention: Works with fragments entered in the previously mentioned categories, such as Text, Photography, Audio or Audiovisual, cannot compete for the Multimedia Project Award.
  • Works not awarded in the National category will compete, regardless of the media in which they were published or broadcast, in the following categories:
    • Extra-regional Prize, worth R $12,000.00 (twelve thousand reais), for works originating from States outside of Banco do Nordeste’s area of ​​activity.
    • State Prize, in the amount of R $8,000.00 (eight thousand reais), one for each State in which Banco do Nordeste operates.
    • JĂşlio Serra Photographic Prize – online election by the public, worth R $8,000.00 (eight thousand reais).
  • Journalistic works submitted by Social Communication or Journalism students, coming from laboratory media at higher education institutions located in the Bank’s area of ​​operation, including the possibility of competition from vehicles located in cities outside the Bank’s area of ​​operation. Northeast in Minas Gerais and EspĂ­rito Santo, compete for state prizes in their respective states worth R $5 thousand. The university work with the highest grade will be entitled to the National University Award, worth R $8,000.

Conditions for Participation

  • Registrations will be accepted for professional journalistic works broadcast in the national territory, which address actions promoting regional development carried out in the area of ​​operation of Banco do Nordeste do Brasil SA (Northeast region, part of Minas Gerais and part of EspĂ­rito Santo). It should be noted that works already awarded in previous editions of this Award will be disqualified.
  • Actions that promote regional development are considered to be initiatives or activities that are economically viable, socially fair, environmentally correct and that respect the principle of cultural diversity.   • Considering the different aspects of regional development, they point out examples of subtopics related to the award theme: credit expansion; urban and rural entrepreneurship; generation of jobs, occupation and income; technology and inovation; investments in infrastructure; socio-environmental responsibility; and cultural manifestations.
  • In the 2024 edition, the National Grand Prize will recognize works that address the theme “Renewable energies and their social, environmental and economic impacts”. By highlighting renewable energy projects and initiatives, reports can show how these technologies drive economic and social development of the region, creating jobs, promoting innovation and attracting investments. The Banco do Nordeste Award for Journalism in Regional Development, by recognizing and encouraging the production of reports in this segment, contributes to an informed and engaged debate about the sustainable future in its area of ​​activity action, inspiring positive actions and promoting responsible regional development.
  • The works entered must have been published or broadcast in products from journalistic companies, and the entry of materials originating from institutional, business or corporate communication vehicles is prohibited.
  • The participation of people who have had any functional or professional relationship with Banco do Nordeste do Brasil SA in the period established in item 2.1 or who are spouses, partners or relatives in a direct, collateral or affinity line, up to the third degree, is prohibited, from employees or collaborators of Banco do Nordeste.
