The International Sports Press Association (AIPS) is happy to announce the launch of the 2023 Sport Media Awards.
The AIPS Sport Media Awards are the most prestigious and only global prize for sports journalism, a true festival to pay homage of the best journalists, photographers and videomakers from around the world.
Categories
- Photography
- The categories below are open to professional photographers who, on traditional or new media platforms, can best capture in a still image:
- Sport Action
- An image that depicts a moment of excellence or athletic skill from a particular sporting event.
- Portfolio
- A portfolio of at least three but no more than five sports photos. These photos may be from the same sport or same event, or they may be from different events and different sports.

- The categories below are open to professional photographers who, on traditional or new media platforms, can best capture in a still image:
- Writing
- These categories are dedicated to the written word, encompassing colour writing and column writing on traditional or new media platforms:
- Best Column
- An article that shows a knowledgeable opinion and that demonstrates research, relevance, authority and an original view on a topic.
- Best Colour Piece
- An article that captures the emotion of an occasion in and around the sporting world, and that shows preparation, creativity, outstanding reporting and a flair for storytelling.
- Best Column
- These categories are dedicated to the written word, encompassing colour writing and column writing on traditional or new media platforms:
- Audio
- A submission that is either a radio report, podcast, piece of commentary or other audio submission that is not only compelling but also displays some technical innovation and quality research.
- Video
- The video categories are dedicated to those who, on traditional or new media platforms, harness the moving image in sport, from the cameraman to the video web caster, to the producer or production team represented by one individual covering a sport event.
- Athlete Profile
- A video longer than 10 minutes that portrays a captivating, in-depth image of an athlete or a prominent and relevant sport figure.
- Documentary
- A video longer than 10 minutes that tells a compelling and revealing story about any aspect of the sport world, showing qualitative research and editorial input combined with quality filmmaking.
- Short Feature
- A video shorter than 10 minutes in length on any sporting subject with strong storytelling, innovative filming and journalistic relevance.
- Athlete Profile
- The video categories are dedicated to those who, on traditional or new media platforms, harness the moving image in sport, from the cameraman to the video web caster, to the producer or production team represented by one individual covering a sport event.
- Young Reporters
- The Young Reporters category is open to professionals that are under 30 (born on or after January 1, 1994). AIPS has invested in the future of sport journalism by creating the respected AIPS Young Reporters Programmes.
- To give an Award to the younger generations is another step in the same direction and underlines AIPS efforts to offer a better future in this profession. Each of the winners will receive a career-boost opportunity: a scholarship in a major international sports event.
- Best young reporters in photography.
- Best young reporters in writing.
- Best young reporters in broadcasting (audio and video).
Prize Information
- Each eligible award consists of an original trophy and prize money of USD 8.000 for the winner; second placed will receive USD 3.000 and third placed USD 2.000 in the Photography (“Sport Action” and “Portfolio”), Writing (“Best Column” and “Best Colour Piece”), “Audio” and Video (“Athlete Profile”, “Documentary” and “Short feature”) categories.
- Winners of each of the “Young Reporters” categories (Photography, Writing and Broadcasting) will receive a career-boost opportunity: a scholarship in a major international sports event. “Young Reporters” categories do not include second and third place. “Special Awards” are not open to submissions.
- Winners will be awarded with a trophy, without prize money. The “Special Awards” categories do not include second and third place.
Eligibility Criteria
- The AIPS Sport Media Awards 2023 are open to professional journalists, whether directly employed or freelancers.
- Applications may come from AIPS cardholders as well as those who are not members of the association but must come from one of the countries represented by the 161 member national associations.
- All entrants must be persons who were at least 18 years of age on November 5, 2022.
- No entry fee is payable.
- Applicants can submit entries in any language. It is advisable, but not compulsory, to submit an English translation. All entries that are not in English and do not have English translation will be screened by a native speaker from the respective member association of AIPS in the first phase. If judged as valuable, the entry will be translated into English via a professional service.
- Applicants are strictly limited to a maximum of two entries across all categories of the Awards. A separate online entry form and supporting materials will be required for each entry.
- Photo entries must be provided from professional photographers only. Photographers may be asked to provide proof of their professional status.
