Entries open for Al-Masry Al-Youm Press Awards – Egypt

Entries are now open for the Al-Masry Al-Youm Press Awards for journalistic works that address issues or topics of public interest in all fields, provided that those works are characterized by a high degree of quality, distinction, and adherence to professional standards.

Mission

  • Launching the annual “Al-Masry Al-Youm Awards” and establishing a standard arbitration mechanism that includes an elite group of people with extensive and diverse professional and academic experience, to select the best journalistic works by young men and women in the Egyptian press, and reward them, according to the rules of fair competition.

Vision

  • Al-Masry Al-Youm consolidates its professional role by encouraging the younger generation of journalists, through a sustainable institutional mechanism that strengthens the professional rules of journalistic work and develops the capabilities of young journalists by rewarding outstanding performance, according to fair and transparent standards.

Tawfiq Diab Award for Personality of the Year

  • On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the founding of Al-Masry Al-Youm, the Foundation is launching a major award in the name of the great national fighter, journalist and writer Tawfiq Diab, the founder of jihad, the knight of the pen and the orator of preachers, who rose to the pulpit defending the 1919 Revolution and the Egyptians and representing the people in the House of Representatives. The prestigious award is given to the most influential person in her field of specialization every year, whether Egyptian, Arab or international, to support and encourage knowledge, reform and support societies at the level of the Arab world and the world.
  • The value of the award is 500 thousand pounds, and it is a tribute to those who made a mark in their reality and contributed in their fields to improving people’s lives, and were a symbol of upholding the message of excellence, quality and giving. An award that celebrates and seeks to honor everything that is constructive for the sake of the great Arab homeland and humanity.

Categories

  • The Al-Masry Al-Youm Journalism Awards, in its first session (2024), are awarded in five categories
    • Salah Diab Prize for Essay
      • The Salah Diab Article Prize is awarded to a young journalist or journalist who writes a column or opinion article, provided that the winning article has the following elements:
        • Choose the topic of the article well, in a way that enhances its importance in the reception environment.
        • Clarity of idea and strength of presentation.
        • Use rational evidence to prove the idea.
        • If information is used in the text, it must be accurate and avoid biased use or being taken out of context.
        • Integrity of language and eloquence of expression.
        • Having a distinctive stylistic feature
    • Ahmed Bahgat Award for Investigation
      • The “Ahmed Bahgat Investigative Award” award is granted to a young journalist or journalist who has accomplished a distinguished and complete news treatment in the investigative format, provided that it is characterized by the following elements:
        • The efficiency of choosing the topic, and the extent to which it meets the interests of the audience.
        • Choose an innovative angle to address the topic.
        • Reaching, through professional tools, important and influential conclusions in the public sphere, including revealing facts and dimensions that are absent from the public.
        • Good selection of sources, and faithful transmission of them.
        • Documenting information and using it well to complete processing.
        • Commitment to professional standards, integrity and fairness.
        • Integrity of language, ingenuity of style, and power of expression
    • Kamel Diab Award for News Story
      • The “Kamel Diab Award for News Story” is granted to a female or young journalist who has completed a distinguished and complete news treatment, in the form of a news story, provided that it is characterized by the following elements:
        • Addressing a current event that is of interest to large segments of the public, in the form of a news story.
        • Good and balanced selection of sources.
        • Accuracy of published information.
        • Clarity and comprehensiveness of the idea.
        • Balance and objectivity.
        • Integrity of language and smoothness of expression
    • Akmal Qartam Caricature Award
      • The “Akmal Qartam Caricature Award” is granted to a young journalist or journalist who has accomplished an artistic treatment in the “caricature” format, provided that it is characterized by the following elements:
        • A new and distinctive idea.
        • Lines that reflect artistic ability and uniqueness in style.
        • A great degree of skillful use of drawing, and its elaborate interweaving with the text (if it exists).
        • Great expressive ability that presents ideas smoothly
    • Naguib Sawiris Prize for Dialogue
      • The Naguib Sawiris Dialogue Award is granted to a female or young journalist who has completed a distinguished and complete journalistic interview, in the form of dialogue, provided that it is characterized by the following elements:
        • The good choice of the interviewer, and the extent to which this choice meets the standards of excellence and exclusivity.
        • The dialogue should reflect a distinguished ability to choose questions and smoothly ask them.
        • The dialogue should produce statements or positions that receive a sufficient amount of interest among the public.
        • The dialogue should be consistent with established professional literature when conducting and publishing press interviews.
        • Good use of language and information, and employing them to enrich dialogue.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Every Egyptian male or female journalist who is not more than 40 years old on April 1, 2024, can apply to compete for one of the “Al-Masry Al-Youm” Journalism Awards, in its first session, provided that none of the submitted works have won in previous journalism competitions, and that The work was published in the period from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024, and submission is made through one of the following means:
    • Sending the journalistic works nominated for competition through the website designated for the awards, as published on it, provided that it is attached with a brief CV of the applicant for competition. A copy of his/her identity card (national number) and a recent personal photo.
    • Submitting the works nominated for competition in print, or on a storage medium (CD or USB Disk), as they were published, accompanied by a brief CV, a copy of the journalist’s ID, and a recent personal photo, at the headquarters of “Al-Masry Al-Youm” newspaper, located at 49 Al-Mubtadiyan Street in Cairo.
    • If the journalist wishing to apply for the competition works in a news agency, and his name is not published on his/her work/works, he must submit his work in print to the “Al-Masry Al-Youm” headquarters, certified by the agency’s editor-in-chief, indicating that this work was produced by the applicant for the competition.
    • If the journalist applying for the competition works in a news agency, newspaper, or electronic news platform affiliated with a non-Egyptian journalistic institution, he must submit, along with his nomination papers, a copy of the press center card for foreign correspondents, or a stamped certificate from the institution in which he works confirming his journalistic status.
    • The Awards Secretariat is committed to notifying the competition applicant of the receipt of his/her work/works nominated for competition, before May 31, 2024
