Deadline: 31 March 2024
The German non-profit organisation International Journalists’ Programmes (IJP) would like to announce its twenty-fifth bursary in 2024 for journalists from the Nordic and Baltic countries.
Up to eleven German and eleven Nordic/Baltic journalists in total will have the opportunity to work for a media outlet in the respectively other country in 2024.
Purpose
- IJP is a non-profit organisation offering sponsored exchange programmes for early and mid-career journalists between Germany and more than 40 other countries and regions. These include the United States, Northern Europe, the Netherlands, Turkey, Latin America, East Asia, Southern Africa and the Middle East. The purpose of these exchanges is to allow participants to experience their host countries from a correspondent’s perspective, exchange knowledge and network within their field.
- Journalists from all countries, who are granted the German-Northern European bursary, receive a deeper and more detailed insight into the political landscape, the economy, and everyday life in the host country. Participants from the Northern countries meet opinion leaders and decision makers in Germany, the largest country in the European Union.
The programme is funded by the Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office), by the foreign ministries of the Nordic countries and by a close circle of private sponsors.
Bursary
- The scholarship programme starts with a three-day introduction conference in one of the Nordic capitals or Berlin. Regularly, the participating journalists will begin their stay at their respective host organizations. These are selected by IJP in consideration of the interests, qualifications and wishes of the individual bursary recipients. The programme concludes with a final meeting. The participants are asked to deliver a three-page report of their experiences. It should also include all contributions produced during their stay. These reports and contributions will be part of the final documentation. After the exchange, they encourage the participants to stay in touch with each other through the IJP alumni network.
- Each fellow will receive a stipend of 3.800 Euro to cover a part of travel expenses, accommodation and personal expenses during their stay in Germany. The participant must cover any additional costs. Work compensation in Germany is up to the individual host organization and cannot be guaranteed.
Eligibility Criteria
- The application is open to any journalist from the Nordic countries between the ages 18 and 45, working for any print, radio or TV media (employed or freelancer). Fluency in German is not expected or a prerequisite for successful application. At least workable knowledge of English is essential.
