Alternativa Film Project: TEEN LAB 2024 (Uzbekistan)

Deadline: 10 May 2024

If you want to make films but you don’t know how to start. If you have always wanted to tell about yourself, create stories, make videos, and edit them, and if you are a teenager from 12 to 18 years old and live in Uzbekistan, Alternativa Film Project is looking for you.

The purpose of the Cinema Workshop is to give its participants the opportunity and tools to experiment and observe the life around them and themselves, as well as to teach them to talk about themselves in an exciting and interesting way in the format of a script, and also in video formats in social networks.

The Cinema Workshop includes 2 in-person 10-day practical modules in June and October 2024 and 1 online crash course in August 2024 (inclusive) where participants will learn how to watch, understand and shoot films in different genres, and learn the “verbatim” techniques, will write a script, look for locations, come up with decorations and conduct an audition and shooting.

What is the film lab for teenagers?

  • The film lab will consist of three parts. Two offline intensive courses (in June and September) and one online session in between. Within this time, the students will try themselves in different roles: create scripts, find characters, shoot videos, and be involved in them as actors. The task is to make you feel comfortable so that the world of cinema won’t be scary or something very adult to you.
  • They want to show you that today, a teenager can make a movie no worse than adults do, and you have all the tools to achieve this. Even if you don’t want to liaise your life with cinema, the most important thing is that they will be talking a lot about you and art, as well as how to find it in the everyday life. You are the main character of this lab.
  • They don’t give score values, nor do they have tests in the usual sense. The tutors are, first and foremost, your co-authors who help you to promote and develop your ideas. At the end of the first intensive session, they will make one common film. At the end of the last session, together with your curators, you will make films based on your scripts.
  • They won’t mark your attendance, but the classes are quite intensive. While applying for the lab, please be prepared to spend 3-4 hours every day. In addition, there will be three filming days, and you are expected to spend them with them from morning till evening. If you are not able to attend all the classes but still wish to take part in the lab, please contact them separately.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The Cinema Workshop is open to capable citizens aged 12 to 18 who meet all following criteria:
    • Citizens or individuals residing in the city of Tashkent and the surrounding areas of the Republic of Uzbekistan,
    • Proficient in Russian enough to understand oral and written speech,
    • Aged 12 to 18,
    • Who are interested in films and/or other video formats, want to tell and invent stories about themselves, make and assemble video,
    • having a written consent from the parent and/or legal representative with permission to be a participant of the Cinema Workshop.
