The Open Society Foundations, Climate Tracker launches the Green Industries program, with the aim of training journalists from Brazil, Chile and Colombia to cover the topic in depth.
The Green Industries program is designed to help journalists understand the key concepts of green industrialization, and the complexity of the scenarios in each country. In the end, they will be better able to identify novel journalistic patterns, as well as research and publish stories on the various aspects of green industrialization. They will also be prepared to avoid common mistakes in this coverage, especially greenwashing speeches.
Each journalist will receive, in addition to group training, individual mentoring for six months, to write 3 reports on the topic, which will be published on the Climate Tracker website and in media outlets in the network in Latin America.
This project lasts six months and will be carried out from May to November 2024. The exact schedule will be sent to the selected people.
In addition, one of the ten selected people will win a special scholarship to cover COP29 in Baku in person, together with the international Climate Tracker team.
Ten journalists from Brazil, Chile and Colombia will be selected for comprehensive training on how to cover the issue in their countries and will receive a scholarship to write powerful reports focused on the just industrial transition. In addition, one person from the group of fellows will be selected to cover, in person, COP29 in Baku.
Categories
- They are looking for stories that fit into one of the following categories:
- Guidelines for in-depth reporting, which are capable of giving the public a complete notion of the matter, with clues on how to have a critical and attentive look at the green industrialization events in their country.
- Guidelines that highlight the green industry worker, understanding this labor market, its problems, potential, specificities, etc.
- Investigative guidelines, with unpublished data or information, that denounce illicit favoring, contradictions between speech and action, greenwashing , violations of human and environmental rights, among other topics.
- Guidelines on innovations with concrete proven results that contribute to the fair energy transition (for example: how companies in a certain sector collectively changed a way of producing something, thus managing to decarbonize part of their processes).
- Guidelines on just transition, with a focus on the well-being of communities and the intersection of that with green industrialization projects.
- And more:
- In Brazil: G20 debates; reindustrialization plans, bioeconomy, etc.
- In Chile: energy transition; lithium; H2V etc.
- In Colombia: reindustrialization, new development models, etc.

- For their commitment and participation, scholarship recipients will receive the following benefits:
- Financial support: At the end of the program, you will have received a total incentive of $900. This is 300 USD for each report.

- In-person opportunity: At the end of the year, a fellow from the Green Industries program will be selected to travel and cover COP29, in Baku, Azerbaijan, alongside the Climate Tracker team and with all expenses paid. This is the most important climate conference in the world! A milestone for your career.
The scholarship recipients will participate in the following activities:
- Attendance to the training program: it is made up of 5 group sessions in online mode. They are usually carried out once a week, in sessions of 1 and a half hours. Other sessions can be scheduled if necessary.
- Constant communication with an assigned mentor: Fellows will be able to have individual sessions and support in the production process throughout the program. They have a team of experienced journalists who will provide support during the six months and will ensure that all doubts are clear, as well as that deadlines are met on time.
- Production of three reports on green industrialization: They must meet certain requirements and quality levels requested by the Climate Tracker team.
Eligibility Criteria
- On this occasion, hired or independent professionals can apply. This is an opportunity for training and professional growth! The schedules are flexible, so you can combine it with your work day.
- Ideal candidates will have:
- Residence in Chile, Colombia or Brazil.
- At least one year of experience in journalism or content creation.
- Proven interest in environmental and climate issues.
- Curiosity and commitment: this is a learning experience that they hope you make the most of.
- To register, the journalist must present a proposal for a schedule/pitch, which will be the first story to be worked on and published, if selected. Then, throughout the program, she must present two more pitches.
Ineligible
- They are not looking for:
- Guidelines with examples of individual company actions
- Uncritical guidelines on programs announced by governments, that do not have action plans and are very generalist
- Guidelines on “miracle” solutions, or technological innovations not yet proven, or without relevant scope.
