Apply for FCAT LAB: Online Post-Production Workshop (Africa)

Applications are now open for the FCAT LAB: Online Post-Production Workshop, an online post-production workshop that offers support to African feature films by awarding prizes in post-production service and cash for a total value of €24,000.

This forum not only wants to recognize outstanding directors and producers, but also aims to increase the visibility and opportunities of emerging proposals by presenting them to sales agents, distributors, VOD platforms and buyers in general.

The FACT LAB, the international workshop to support African film post-production of feature films, returns for its fourth edition in online format within the framework of “The Tree of Words”, the space dedicated to the professional and training activities of the Film Festival African – FCAT. The scheduled dates for the FCAT LAB are Thursday, May 30 and Friday, May 31 of 2024.

As has been happening since its first edition in 2021, thanks to the support of the Agency Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the collaboration of different Spanish and international companies, the FCAT aims to provide tangible support to feature film projects from Africa through awards granted in the production market filmic. At the same time, the FACT LAB seeks to increase the visibility and opportunities of films in post-production phase, presenting them to sales agents, distributors, VOD platforms and buyers in general, in order to facilitate access to the sales and distribution market.

Program

  • The program takes place over two days of work, with the participation of three international juries in charge of evaluating and awarding post-production awards. The producers and/or directors whose projects have been selected will participate in the modality online to all the activities planned in the program of this workshop; project pitching and one-to-one meetings included. Finally, producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, VOD platforms and film festival programmers interested in the selected projects, will be able to access the viewing and pitching of the projects and reserve a one-to-one meeting with the projects that interest you. All activities will be in English.
  • Day 1
    • On the first day of the FCAT LAB, the producers and/or directors of the selected projects will present their films online (virtual pitching ), in English, before the jury official of the FCAT LAB 2024. It should be noted that all members of the jury will have viewed previously selected projects.
  • Day 2
    • After the pitching, prior agreement with the workshop organizers, the projects selected will have the possibility of participating in one-to-one meetings with members of the jury, producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, VOD platforms and film festival programmers who may have shown interest in learning more about background of the projects presented. Finally, in the evening, within the framework of the gala closing of the 21st edition of the FCAT African Film Festival, the awards will be announced for the feature films in post-production. On this day, the FCAT LAB organizers will notify the participants and winners of the FCAT LAB 2024 awards.

Prizes and Conditions

  • FCAT LAB 2024 will have the following prizes in cash and in kind, all of them awarded by an international jury:
    • €1,500 cash prize offered by the AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL-FCAT. The The film that will win this award will be selected in future editions of the African Film Festival-FCAT
    • Prize in kind valued at €5,500 offered by LA COLORA (Spain), for grading services distributed over 10 work days -of which 2 would be used for forming and the remaining 8 for color – ending with the delivery of a Quicktime in high quality.
    • Prize in kind valued at E5,000 offered by TRES GATOS SONIDO (Spain) for editing and sound mixing services for a feature film, with a maximum limit of 10 days of technical work included.
    • Prize in kind valued at E5,000 for translation and subtitle localization services in Spanish, English and French, creating a package of materials for distribution international, including the creation of a spotting list and a DCP master’s degree, offered by LASERFILM (Spain)
    • Prize in kind valued at E2,500 in services to create a material package for international distribution, including the creation of a DCP master, offered by TOMAHAWK DIGITAL CINEMA SERVICES SL (Spain)
    • Service award valued at E2,500 for the development of an international marketing strategy distribution at film festivals offered by the international sales agency and distributor SUDU CONNEXION (France). This award includes the design of a roadmap of international festivals and the management of requests for participation in said festivals.
    • Prize in kind valued at E2000 for the translation and localization of subtitles in a language (to choose between Spanish, English, French or Italian) of a feature film and discount of the 30% for the translation and localization of subtitles in a second language (to choose between Spanish, English, French or Italian) provided by Bienza Translations (Spain)
  • The awards will be announced within the framework of the closing gala of the 21st edition. of the African Film Festival-FCAT, scheduled for the afternoon of Friday, May 31 in Tarifa (Spain).

Criteria

  • All feature film projects (documentary, fiction, animation and experimental of a minimum duration of 60 minutes) produced and performed mostly in Africa. If possible, the producer and/or director is requested to send the film complete. In the event that the work is still in the assembly phase, it is possible to send the sequences edited, taking into consideration that these must represent at least half of the duration movie’s ending.
  • For virtual project pitching, it will be possible to present a more developed version of the work in post-production. In the event that the dialogues of the film projects are not in Spanish, English or French, they will have to have subtitles in one of these languages for selection. Likewise, if the project is selected, it will be the obligation of the producer and/or director to provide a copy in original version with English subtitles (English speaking films included). The selection of the final stages of the projects will be carried out by a committee made up of members of the African Film Festival. FCAT assisted by external experts, and will be indisputable and irrefutable.
