Apply for Sixth Cycle of the Climate Journalism Mentoring Program

Deadline: 9 May 2024

Climate Tracker is proud to present the sixth cycle of its Climate Journalism Mentoring Program, exclusive for Argentina, Mexico and Brazil, within the framework of the imminent G20.

They challenge you to join this unique experience, to tell stories that need to be made visible and to explore various formats.

What does the sixth cycle of the mentoring program consist of?

  • In this training initiative, each participant faces the challenge of creating three high-impact stories about the energy transition in Latin America. In these texts, the common challenges of three Latin American giants will be addressed: Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, seen as the largest emitting countries of greenhouse gases in the region.
  • Journalists will delve into key issues ranging from fossil fuels to renewable energy, examining public policies, energy projects, finances and socio-environmental conflicts, among other crucial aspects, coinciding with the G20 energy ministers’ meeting, which will take place on November 18 and 19 in Rio de Janeiro.
  • This initiative lasts four months in which participants will receive personalized editorial support from the Climate Tracker team. In addition, they will have an economic stimulus, mentoring from prominent leaders in the region and the opportunity to develop a network of regional contacts.
  • Attention: unlike previous cycles of the mentoring program, this edition consists of two phases.
    • Phase 1
      • Participants will immerse themselves in an interesting live conversation (approximately 60 minutes) about the energy transition and climate change in their countries. They will be accompanied by local leaders, as well as former fellows from the mentoring program, who will share key advice on how to address these issues.
      • These are the dates of the conversations:
        • Argentina: Monday, May 13 at 6:00 p.m. (local time)
        • Mexico: Wednesday, May 15 at 3:00 p.m. (local time)
        • Brazil: Thursday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m. (local time).
      • At the end of each live conversation, participants will be challenged to send a journalistic story pitch to develop during the mentoring program.
      • The Climate Tracker team will select two proposals per country, to form an outstanding team of six journalists in Argentina, Mexico and Brazil.
    • Phase 2
      • The six selected journalists will immerse themselves in an exciting collective and hands-on learning experience between the months of June and August 2024. During this time, they will benefit from the following:
        • Total financial incentive of $900: Receive $300 for each story published, direct support for your talent and dedication!
        • Group training sessions: Explore vital topics such as the energy transition, the climate crisis and environmental journalism. Get ready to acquire knowledge that will boost your professional growth!
        • Personalized editorial support and tutoring adapted to your needs: With the support of the team, you will reach new levels of excellence and create a journalistic product of exceptional quality.
        • Opportunity to expand your network of contacts and journalistic portfolio through the regional media network: They want your work to be recognized!
      • In short, this is an opportunity to improve your skills as a journalist, expand your professional connections and secure your place in the climate change arena.
      • By the end of the three months of Phase 2, you will have become a leading member of the network of climate journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean and will be prepared to face new challenges.

Eligibility Criteria

  • This opportunity is aimed at journalists residing in Argentina, Mexico and Brazil who are willing to tell stories about the energy transition in the region.
  • Both journalists who work in the media and those who work independently are welcome to apply. It is a training and learning experience, which you can combine with your other responsibilities.
  • The ideal candidates:
    • They will have at least one year of experience in journalism.
    • They will demonstrate an evident interest in environmental and climate issues.
    • They will attend the live conversation.
    • They will present a convincing journalistic proposal (after the discussion).
  • In addition, they will value curiosity and commitment, since this learning experience is designed so that you get the most out of it. It’s your chance to stand out and contribute to the dialogue about the future of Latin America!
