Call for Applications: Sports Journalist Residency in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie (France)

Deadline: 17 April 2024

On the initiative and with the support of the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC) of Pays de la Loire, the Urban Community of Pays de Saint Gilles Croix de Vie wishes to host a sports journalist residency for mediation purposes, media, information, freedom of expression and digital education.

Objectives

  • Promote the discovery of the profession of sports journalist
  • Design and record a sports-themed podcast
  • Discover and practice radio writing
  • Discover the techniques to comment on a live sporting event
  • Design and produce a live sports commentary
  • Train local actors to produce podcasts
  • Support the development of a practice and an informed reception of the various media
  • Raise awareness of freedom of expression and promote citizen participation in democratic debate

Themes

  • Particular attention will be paid to the selection of journalists if they wish to work on the following themes:
    • Sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games
    • Deciphering sports news and information
    • The production of radio content (podcsast)
  • The themes of the Territorial Sports Project of the Pays de Saint Gilles Croix de Vie:
    • The development and promotion of the practice of parasport
    • The feminization of sports practice
    • The impact of physical and sporting activity on health (healthy sport)
    • The importance of sports practice for seniors
    • Support for local sports associations and their local events

What is a journalist residence?

  • Welcoming a media and information professional to a given territory, over a long period, in immersion with the local population, and more particularly with young people.
    • This residence is a residence for mediation and education with the different actors and public in the territory.
    • The residence must be built in partnership with local stakeholders, whether they are within the field educational, social or cultural.
    • The resident journalist will be able to contact local media or interested professional media (local or national), in order to include the project in a territorial dynamic.
    • This residency is aimed at professional journalists (freelance journalist or journalist integrated into an editorial team), ideally with a press card, and can concern any type of media/support: written or web press, radio, video, comic strip, documentary.

Financial Conditions

  • The resident journalist will benefit from a maximum residence allowance of 8,000 (remuneration of the resident journalist, all taxes, charges and contributions attached thereto, included).
  • Travel costs within the mission territory are covered by the intermunicipality up to 250 euros (all taxes, charges and contributions attached thereto, included).
  • The intercommunality will provide accommodation as part of this residence.
  • The resident journalist must be independent in his travels; to do so, he has a personal vehicle and holds a valid license and insurance. Meals remain the responsibility of the resident journalist.
  • To carry out the workshops, the intermunicipality will provide the journalist with the podcast equipment necessary for the production of content (rodecasterpro, microphones, headsets, etc.).

Duration

  • 2 months of a full-time equivalent

The expectations of the residence

  • Project 1: “Like a real sports journalist, record your podcast”
    • The journalist in residence will be invited to take on the major themes of the Territorial Sports Project in order to produce podcasts with the inhabitants of the Pays de Saint Gilles Croix de Vie and more particularly the youth structures. Meeting with a journalist, discovery of the editorial line and podcast production will be the key words of these workshops.
    • Depending on the themes, sports associations and athletes in the region will be invited by the journalist to testify to enrich the podcast. These workshops invite residents to take ownership of the Territorial Sports Project and promote diversity of content.
  • Project 2: “In the shoes of a commentator, cover a live sporting event”
    • To prepare for the final event of the Olympics, the journalist in residence will offer meeting/production workshops around live sports commentary. This will involve discovering the inner workings of the design and production of sports commentary. At the end of these workshops, the beneficiaries will be invited to comment on the final sporting event “Games in the Land of Saint Gilles Croix de Vie” live.
    • These workshops will be open to members of local sports associations as well as youth structures wishing to participate.
  • Project 3: “Training in podcast production”
    • With the aim of making available the podcast material acquired by the Pays de Saint Gilles Croix de Vie AgglomĂ©ration, training sessions for facilitators of youth structures as well as agents of the Maison des Solidarities des Territoires will be organized in order to understand the use of equipment, design and record podcasts. These training courses aim to include media and information education in the territory beyond the periods of residence.

Locations

  • The actions carried out by the journalist in residence will take place on the territory of the Urban Community of the Pays de Saint Gilles Croix de Vie. Particularly in places such as youth structures, the Territorial House of Solidarity and Families, the headquarters of the Agglomeration of the Pays de Saint Gilles Croix de Vie, the Sports Complex of the LycĂ©e de Saint Gilles Croix de Vie, etc.

Eligibility Criteria

  • If you are a professional journalist working on the national territory wishing to carry out this residency project for the purposes of media and information education, you are invited to send your application duly accompanied by additional documents.
  • Additional parts to be provided
    • A letter stating your motivation and a precise and detailed plan of the actions that you would like to implement
    • A curriculum vitae
    • Possible periods of presence
    • Any element that you would like to bring to the attention of the members of the commission selection (website, blog, list of your different journalistic productions, etc.).
