Are you an aspiring young movie maker who is an Austen fan? Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) invites all North American amateur filmmakers under the age of 30 to compete in this annual creative contest.
JASNA sponsor the Young Filmmakers Contest to encourage the study, interpretation, and appreciation of Jane Austen among new generations.
Create a short original film (five minutes or less) inspired by either of the following:
- The theme of JASNA’s 2024 Annual General Meeting: “Austen, Annotated: Jane Austen’s Literary, Cultural, and Political Origins”
- A general theme inspired by Jane Austen and/or her world, novels, juvenilia, letters, characters, themes, or adaptations.
Award Information
- Three winners are selected each year and receive the following recognition:
- Cash awards of $600 for first place, $300 for second place, and $200 for third place
- One year of membership in the Jane Austen Society of North America
- Winning films will be premiered for attendees at JASNA’s Annual General Meeting and will be available for viewing by a global audience on this website and through JASNA’s video-sharing platforms and social media.
Eligibility Criteria
- Works must be adapted from or inspired by Jane Austen’s writing or life. They may be comedies, dramas or documentaries in live action or animation. They may be modernizations or mashups of Austen and another public domain author. They may be set any time from the Regency era to the present or even in the future. They may be cast with puppets, pets or people.
- Entrants in the contest must be 30 years old or younger at 11:59 p.m. on the submission deadline date.
- Films will be judged on creativity, originality, artistic/technical quality and relevance to the theme.
- To be considered, films and videos must be no longer than five minutes. Works must be shot in widescreen format and submitted as an MP4 file.
