The Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF) is offering a new opportunity under the HIVOS We Lead programme, which works to strengthen the influence and position of young women, whose sexual and reproductive health and rights are most neglected.
As part of this program, TRF is providing training to journalists in Guatemala to improve their knowledge and skills to effectively report on these issues.
This builds on TRF’s mission to support free, fair and informed societies and its expertise in using the power of journalism and the law to promote media freedom and protect human rights.
The program will deepen reporters’ expertise on issues related to the sexual and reproductive health rights of young women in Guatemala, as well as how to identify and address misinformation, digital safety and storytelling while addressing addresses the issue of social stigma. The program will also cover Reuters journalism standards and the Foundation’s principles, source protection, journalism solutions, data visualization, ethical interviewing and digital competencies, including how to maximize your social media audience.
It will include a combination of interactive sessions, expert briefings and exercises, to keep the training experience highly practical, engaging and relevant. The training will be given in Spanish and will last four days in Guatemala.
Action Community representatives working on the We Lead program will also receive media training. Participants in both courses will meet at various points in the program and will be encouraged to foster connections, work together and build a sustainable network.
Course Logistics
- The training will begin with an online welcome meeting for all selected participants the week of May 13. Facilitators will outline the structure of the training and give participants the opportunity to get to know each other before the in-person session on May 20-23.
- TRF will cover travel and accommodation expenses for participants residing outside of Antigua, from May 19 to 23. Meals will be provided, from dinner on the 19th to lunch on the 23rd.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be full-time journalists or regular contributors to independent media or data journalism in Guatemala
- They must have at least two years of professional experience and have a correct level of spoken and written Spanish
- Once selected, candidates must submit a letter from their editor supporting their participation in the program.
