The European University Institute (EUI) invites journalists in targeted Widening countries to a paid residency in Florence, taking place between 30 September and 29 November 2024.
To foster dialogue between journalists and researchers, the European University Institute (EUI) Max Weber Programme (MWP) offers a paid stay for experienced journalists with interest in social or political sciences, history, economy, or law. The journalist in residence can stay at the EUI from two to twenty days, engages with the MWP Fellows and gains insight into the EUI MWP research.
The European University Institute (EUI) is an international postgraduate and post‐doctoral research‐ intensive university based in Fiesole and Florence, Italy. Established by its founding European member states, its aim is to contribute to cultural and scientific development in the social sciences in Europe and beyond.
The Max Weber Programme (MWP) is Europe’s largest structured post‐doctoral programme in the social sciences, designed for junior post‐doctoral Fellows who would like to pursue an academic career, concentrate on their own research, and enhance their academic practice in a multidisciplinary environment
Objective
- The goal of the Journalist in Residence is to offer journalists the opportunity to familiarize themselves with and deepen their knowledge in specific areas of research in social sciences and humanities on the premises of the EUI. The MWP aims to enable the journalists to be in daily contact with research and gain a better understanding of the ways researchers think and research in social sciences and humanities works.
Funding Information
- The EUI MWP Journalist in Residence is granted with €9,000 per stay in its maximum format (20 days of stay, 15 hrs of training, such as talks, seminars, workshops, consultations). The grant depends on the length of the stay and activities covered. The funding includes reimbursement of travel expenses and accommodation, per diems and training fee. The journalist in residence may also be offered a shared workplace at the EUI during the time of their stay, including a computer, if needed.
Duration
- The stay can take place at any time within 30 September to 29 November 2024. The duration of the stay is two to twenty days. The openings take place annually within the EUI Widening Europe Programme.
Expected Activities
- During their stay, journalists in residence are expected to pursue the following activities:
- mutual exchange with the MWP Fellows
- research for potential projects/publications
- training to MWP Fellows on social sciences and humanities journalism/communication consisting of at least one internal seminar and one workshop MWP does not expect the journalists to publish anything related to EUI MWP in return. Instead, EUI MWP program supports free and independent journalism.
Target Group
- The Journalist in Residence is targeted at freelance and staff journalists who are interested in scientific journalism in social sciences and humanities and have at least five years of media work experience. Print, online‐media, radio and TV journalists with proficient English and a professional interest in deepening their knowledge and understanding of social sciences and humanities from the eligible countries are welcome to apply.
Eligibility Criteria
- The eligibility is limited to journalists with at least five years of media work experience with background from and a journalistic impact in at least one of the eligible countries. The eligible countries are: Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine.
