“Overpower, Overtake, Overcome”: A Visual Tribute to Women & Sport Photography Contest

Deadline: 6 June 2024

The Global Observatory for Gender Equality and Sport has launched a photo competition and exhibition, which puts a spotlight on empowering women and girls in all their diversity in and through physical activity, physical education and sport, from all walks of life.

To mark the Paris 2024 Olympic and beyond, the Global Observatory for Gender Equality & Sport, UNESCO, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), UN Women, UNAIDS, MTV Staying Alive Foundation, Sport for Social Change Network Africa and Bobbi Brown are teaming up to organize a powerful globally travelling photo exhibition: “Overpower. Overtake. Overcome: A Visual Tribute to Women & Sport.”

They aim to celebrate women and girls in sport in all their diversity, striving to overpower stereotypes, overtake obstacles and overcome barriers across all walks of life.

Women and girls in all their diversity around the world from rural fields, school playgrounds, refugee camps to elite sport stadiums, women who are challenging the status quo, levelling out the playing fields and pushing for a transformation, with resilience and courage despite sparse resources and multiple challenges.

A picture is a worth a thousand words they say, and they want to hear your story. Enter the competition and share your amazing photo telling the story of either the challenges or triumphs of women and girls in the world of sport. Share a title and write up as background to your thoughts around the photo and what it depicts, and you could stand a chance to win and have your photo exhibited in Paris (France), Johannesburg (South Africa), Dakar (Senegal) and Geneva (Switzerland).

Further, the winning picture will be prominently shown as part of a high impact exhibition organized by the UNESCO at their headquarters in Paris, that is dedicated to empowerment through sport. In addition, a virtual exhibition with global reach will be hosted.
  • While some photos will be selected for display during Paris 2024, as a legacy and a testament to sustainable activism and advocacy, a broader and expanded range of photos will be depicted in an “Overpower.
