How can poetry be an effective response to current events and the issues impacting the communities? How can journalism and poetry help them make connections between global issues and the local and personal contexts? Students are invited to explore these questions and make their voices heard in their entries to the Fighting Words Poetry Contest.

- Global Health
- Global Health includes stories about health science, inequities, mental health, outbreaks and epidemics, food security, clean water, and more.
- Peace and Conflict
- Peace and Conflict includes stories about conflicts around the world, what drives them, how they impact people, and pathways to peace.
- Information and Artificial Intelligence
- Information and Artificial Intelligence includes stories on the latest technologies, including how algorithms work, who benefits from these systems, and who is harmed.
- Climate and Environment
- Climate and Environment includes stories about climate change and environmental damage, the communities most impacted, and how people are resisting and building solutions.

Eligibility Criteria
- Current K-12 students anywhere in the world may enter. Students may write in any language, and are welcome to submit multilingual poems. Judges will have reading fluency in English and Spanish.
