Royal Society of Biology Photography Competition

The Royal Society of Biology annual photography competition invites amateurs to submit photographs on a theme Photography Competition is Transforming Life.

The Royal Society of Biology invite submissions that explore the profound changes occurring across the planet, highlighting the resilience and adaptability of life in response to environmental changes, human intervention, and scientific innovation. Including but not limited to:

  • Ecosystem dynamics and biodiversity: explore the transformations across diverse natural or managed ecosystems, from the microscopic to the macroscopic, or landscape scale views
  • From single cells, or small multicellular life all the way up to mega fauna and flora; from life in one place to mass migrations, or wildlife living in unexpected places such as towns and cities.
  • Humans transforming life: reflect on humanity’s reciprocal relationship with the natural world, including their creation of new habitat areas on land or in the oceans
  • Scientific innovation in the biosciences including climate change mitigation measures, and examples of the beneficial and life-changing impact of bioscientists’ work and innovation

Award Information

  • There are two categories in the competition, each with a cash prize:
    • Photographer of the Year (18 and over) – ÂŁ1,000 top prize
    • Young Photographer of the Year (under 18) – ÂŁ500 top prize

Eligibility Criteria

  • This competition is open to any amateur photographers both in and outside of the UK (i.e. anyone who earns less than 50% of their annual income through photography).
  • Entrants can enter either the Photographer of the Year category or the Young Photographer of the Year category.
  • Each entrant may enter up to three photographs into the competition.
  • Images should be high resolution JPEG or PNG files and no larger than 10MB in size.
  • Entrants must fill in all sections of the entry form.
  • Please read the competition’s full terms and conditions before entering and submitting your photographs.
  • Photographers are requested to consider their own welfare and that of other individuals and they take care in their attempt get their photographs. Past photographs can be submitted into the competition.

Criteria

  • The Organiser of the competition is the Royal Society of Biology, 1 Naoroji Street, London, WC1X 0GB. The competition is open to anyone except those involved in its organisation, employees of the Society and their immediate family, sponsors of the competition, judges and their immediate family.
  • The competition is free to enter and is open to Society members and non-members. Entrants must not be professional photographers. For the purposes of this competition, a professional photographer will be considered to be someone who makes more than half their annual income from photography-related work.
  • Entrants to the Young Photographer of the Year category must be under 18 years of age at the time of the closing date (20 th June 2024).
  • Entrants under 13 years of age must seek consent from a parent or guardian in order to take part in the competition. Details for the entrant’s parent or guardian will be requested when they submit their photograph(s). The Royal Society of Biology will contact the parent or guardian to confirm details of consent are correct.
  • Prior to submission, entrants must not have offered any of their entries for sale, been paid for any publication of their entries, or won or been runner-up in any other photographic competition with any of their entries.
  • At the time of submission, entrants must declare to the Organiser whether they have entered their images in any other photographic competition. Such submissions will be accepted for entry into the RSB Photography Competition at the judges’ discretion.
  • Individuals who have entered the RSB Photography Competition in a previous year can enter again in 2024, however must declare in which year they had previously taken part and whether they had received an award. Previous winners of the RSB Photography Competition cannot enter the competition again.
