The Arab Regional Center for World Heritage and the Heritage Authority of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in cooperation with the UNESCO Chair for World Heritage and the Department of Sustainable Tourism in the Arab Region, announce the launch of the third edition of the short film competition “The Story of a Trace,” with the aim of increasing Arab youth’s awareness of world heritage in the Arab region and highlighting Cultural and natural heritage in their local surroundings by creating innovative short films to tell different stories centered around World Heritage sites in the Arab region.
Objectives
- Increasing youth awareness of heritage sites located in their local or regional surroundings.
- Forming a network of Arab youth interested in cultural and technical aspects in Arab countries
- Reaching a contemporary interpretation of heritage and its narration
- Involving the local community, especially youth, in heritage narration
- Encouraging understanding of the role of heritage sites in contributing to improving the future of Arab youth and influencing their lives
- Promoting World Heritage sites and encouraging sustainable tourism to them
- Promoting the achievement of sustainable development goals at different levels, whether cultural, social, economic or environmental
Topic
- In its third edition, the Athar Story Competition sheds light on the traditional crafts found in World Heritage Sites, especially the relationship of local communities to the site, the crafts and memories that bind them to it, the cultural practices associated with the site, and the relationship of young people to the site at the present time.
- Contestants submit a proposal to film a short, innovative film for a World Heritage Site in their country using a smartphone or any of the available filming technologies. The filming does not need to be professional. The most important goal of the competition is to address the site in an innovative way that suits young people’s trends and interests. Short films can include stories about crafts present or linked to the World Heritage Site listed on the UNESCO list.
Prize Information
- An all-expenses-paid trip for all winners to the Asir region in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
- Receive practical training with a film director
- Filming a joint film with all the winners
- If the winners are unable to attend in person for logistical reasons, they will be compensated with a sum of money not exceeding 700 US dollars.
Criteria
- The participant must be between 18 and 30 years old.
- Applicants can participate as individuals or as a group of up to 3 people.
- Films must not revolve around any political issues.
- The duration of the film should be between 3-5 minutes.
- The film must cover one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Arab region.
- The film must include translation from Arabic to English and from English to Arabic.
- None of the winners will be compensated with a financial sum if they are unable to participate.
