Third International Call for Films Generated with AI

Deadline: 9 March 2025

The +RAIN Film Festival opens an international call for submissions of films that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) models in their creative processes, and that explore their aesthetic, narrative, ethical and political possibilities and implications.

In its third edition, the +RAIN Film Festival invites directors to present and discuss their work in public screenings. An international jury selects the most innovative films to also be exhibited at SĂłnar+D. +RAIN Film Festival is the first European festival of films generated with AI. The event invites discovery, experimentation and detailed reflection on the most relevant aspects of authorial creation generated by this transformative technology.

+RAIN Film Festival aims to give space to cinematographic proposals made with generative AI that experiment with cinematographic language, that adopt a critical look towards the limits and biases of technology itself, that appropriate these tools in unexpected ways that they stress the hegemonic forms of representation.

+RAIN Film Festival is open to cinematographic proposals directed by filmmakers and visual artists, but also by creators who come from other fields, to consider a wide spectrum of cinematic codes and languages that play with the possibilities of the Intel· Generative Artificial Intelligence. +RAIN Film Festival wants to promote the participation of emerging and trainee filmmakers, with the aim of giving space to new talents and views.

Funding Information

  • For the exhibition of the selected films, the +RAIN Film Festival will pay a fee of €250 (gross), which also includes participation in the various Festival activities and screening of the selected films at SĂłnar+D.
  • The Festival covers accommodation and travel expenses for one author per project (fixing a maximum amount).
  • Among the works selected, two prizes will be awarded, at the irrevocable judgment of the jury:
    • Best film prize: €3,000 (gross)
    • Emerging talent award: €2,000 (gross)
  • +RAIN Film Festival also reserves the right to award other prizes, both awarded by the jury and in collaboration with external entities.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The call for film submissions is international.
  • They can be produced by people or groups of any nationality and in any language, as long as they are of legal age.

  • Films generated in whole or in part with AI models are accepted, as long as the selection committee considers them to use AI models in a meaningful way in the creation process.

Selection Criteria

  • The +RAIN Film Festival selection committee will select the films that will be shown at the Festival. An international jury will choose the films to exhibit at SĂłnar +D.
  • His decision is final.
  • The Festival and the selection committee reserve the right to make changes on these bases or add annexes, as long as it is justified and does not harm the works and the participants. Any changes will be communicated publicly.
  • The Festival reserves the right to exclude those works that incorporate any type of able-bodied, racial, sexual, gender discrimination or any fundamental rights in their content.
  • Participation in the Festival implies acceptance of these rules, and the festival reserves the right to admit works that do not comply with them.
  • Once the work has been selected, the authors must confirm their participation by signing a letter of acceptance of the conditions established. Once their participation has been confirmed, the work cannot be withdrawn from the Festival.

Application Requirements

  • Submitted films must be generated with AI-based models. Models that are based on understanding and generating content are accepted, such as text-to-video, video-to-video, text-to-audio, etc.
  • They must be produced after January 1, 2024.
  • Works are open to any film genre.
  • The original version can be in any language, as long as English subtitles are provided.
