Wiki Loves Folklore: Sharing Nigeria’s Intangible Cultural Heritage with the World

Applications are now open for the Wiki Loves Folklore, an international photographic competition to enjoy and celebrate the cultural diversity from around the World through Wikimedia projects.

Wiki loves Folklore in Nigeria is organized by the Wikimedia Nigeria in collaboration with other Wikimedia affiliates in Nigeria. Everybody can participate.

The basic aim of the competition is to collect photos of cultural heritage to illustrate articles in the worldwide free encyclopedia Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects. The photos provided must match the theme, although the contest is not limited to any official list of protected areas, which means that most users will be able to find several pertaining subjects close to the theme emphasizing on folk culture of that area. Last year their theme was festivals, rituals, and ceremonies to document the cultural heritage. This year they are back with folklore heritage. There have been contests organized in different regions locally on the national levels, such as Wiki Loves Culture, Wiki Loves Festivals, Wiki Loves Folk, Wiki Loves Heritage for documenting culture.

The cultural photo contest brings opportunities to photographers around the globe to document culture around different parts of the world.

Scope

  • This photography contest is focused on folk culture of different regions on categories, such as, but not limited to, folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folklore, and tradition, including ballads, folktales, fairy tales, legends, traditional song and dance, folk plays, games, seasonal events, calendar customs, folk arts, folk religion, mythology etc.

Prizes

  • The international prizes for Wiki Loves Folklore are as follows:
    • 1st prize: 400 USD
    • 2nd prize: 300 USD
    • 3rd prize: 100 USD
    • Top 10 consolation prizes: 40 USD Each
    • Best Video prize and best Audio prize: 50 USD Each
    • Top uploader prize for images: First Prize: 300 USD, Second prize: 150 USD
    • Wiki Loves Folklore Postcards to top 100 Uploaders
    • Certificates and postcards to Local Organizers.
  • Disclaimer: Prizes will be distributed in the form of major brand gift cards or vouchers, equivalent to the local currency amount.

What they won’t accept?

  • They won’t accept media that are:
    • Out of Commons Project scope.
    • Which lack EXIF information.
    • that are excessive processed and digitally altered.
    • Pornographic and explicit images.
    • Artwork due to copyright issues, etc.

Rules

  • Rule 1: Contributors uploading media must possess the copyrights to the submitted content.
  • Rule 2: Photos should be submitted between the designated period of 1st February to 31st March 2024. While historical photographs are accepted (provided the uploader holds the copyright), they must be uploaded within the contest timeframe.
  • Rule 3: All entries must be licensed under a free copyright license or released into the public domain. The recommended license is Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0), as facilitated by the upload wizard.
  • Rule 4: Each eligible image must be identified by tagging it with {{Wiki Loves Folklore 2024}}. This tag is automatically applied when using the dedicated blue button with the special upload link on the main contest page.
  • Rule 5: Eligible submissions include photos associated with any of the listed categories.
  • Rule 6: Participants are required to enable email communication on Wikimedia Commons to facilitate contact in case their image is selected for a prize.

Ineligibility

  • Re-uploading Restriction: Entries that are already present on Wikimedia Commons are ineligible for submission. Re-uploading of images is not permitted.
  • Scope Compatibility: All entries must align with the scope of Wikimedia Commons. Submissions that deviate from this scope will be disqualified, and there is a possibility of deletion without prior notice.
  • Exclusion of Watermarks, Timestamps, and Credits: Images featuring watermarks, timestamps, or image credits on the visual content itself, or any other form of editing associating the image with the uploader, are not considered eligible for the contest.
  • Prohibition of Pornographic Content: Pornographic images and videos are strictly prohibited and will not be accepted as valid entries in the contest.
