Anna-Maria and Stephen M. Kellen Fellowships (Germany)

The ACG’s fellowship programs allow professionals and academics in the relatively early stages of their careers to complete in-depth research while meeting with their transatlantic counterparts. The programs are designed to broaden fellows’ professional experiences and worldviews and to enable them to establish working relationships overseas. Most fellows use this opportunity as a stepping stone to advance their careers.

Applicants should present a project proposal of three to five pages detailing their plans, including the background and scope of the research, the general sources and institutions with which they would like to consult, and the relevance for the transatlantic relationship. A research itinerary for the fellowship duration will be further developed once selected.

Fellows receive a $7,000 stipend, which covers transatlantic airfare and domestic travel, as well as room and board, for a minimum of 21 days. The initial stipend payment will have $1,000 withheld pending the submission of a final report. Fellows work closely with the Program Director to organize a detailed itinerary before the stipend is released. Travel must take place within one calendar year of selection.

After completing the fellowship, fellows are required to submit an analytical report on their research findings. This report must be suitable for publishing by the American Council on Germany. Fellows are also asked to share their findings with a broader audience through presentations and discussions at ACG Warburg Chapters and/or their local communities, as well as on social media.

Working knowledge of the English language is a prerequisite. Journalists who are employed by a media organization are encouraged to apply. Freelance journalists are asked to demonstrate where resulting articles and/or related pieces could be published.

Fellowships are meant to give individuals new life experiences and to help move their careers forward. While there is no age limit, the Kellen Fellowship is intended for those in the early stages of their careers.

Eligibility

Candidates for the Kellen Fellowships must:

• Be a German citizen residing in Berlin;
• Be in the relatively early stages of their careers;
• Have a minimum of five years of relevant work experience;
• Holds a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent);
• Have a sincere commitment to furthering the transatlantic relationship.
