With this fellowship, the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Washington DC gives a select number of US- or Canada based journalists the opportunity for on-the-ground reporting on climate disinformation case studies in North America.
The articles will be published as part of a Böll dossier on battling climate disinformation.
What they offer?
- A stipend of $3,000 for an on-the-ground research fellowship (including travel costs within North America)
- Publication on the websites and promotion via the social media channels
- Ownership and the right to publish elsewhere stay with the fellow
What is expected during the fellowship?
- Format: Reporting can be in the form of
- one longer, investigative piece OR
- two to three shorter articles and/or interviews
- articles are accompanied by supporting photographs / videos taken at the place(s) of reporting, to be published along with the article(s)
- Timeline: Fellowships start on June 1, 2024. Fellows will organize their travel and research on their own. Travel and writing must be completed by September 15, 2024.
- Social media: Fellows are expected to engage with the Heinrich Böll Foundation Washington, DC over social media (Twitter/X, Instagram, Bluesky, and/or LinkedIn) to document their travels and to promote their publications.
Who can apply?
- Applicants should be:
- based in the US or Canada
- have a strong track record of publishing on climate and/or democracy issues
- have experience conducting on-the-ground research
- Special consideration will be given to journalists:
- from regional or local media outlets,
- from diverse backgrounds who can offer lesser-heard perspectives,
- Submitting proposals with a supporting audiovisual concept including photo or video content.
