JSK Fellowship is seeking journalists who are eager to explore, identify and test ideas for improving access to news and information people need to create and sustain robust democratic communities.
A JSK Fellowship is an individual experience that is intertwined with twice-weekly cohort events that include leadership workshops, skills training and discussions with guest experts. Other than these commitments to the cohort, fellows have a lot of freedom to decide how to spend their time and how to approach the journalism challenge they want to focus on. Each fellow meets regularly with one of the JSK directors who are their primary adviser for the year. There is not a single prescription for a successful fellowship year.
Components
- A JSK Fellowship has two primary components:
- Exploring and testing ideas for addressing a problem in journalism that you want to work on.
- Identifying mindsets and tools needed to become a more resilient leader and change agent.
- To support your work on both, JSK provides individual coaching, tailored workshops, peer-to-peer learning and access to Stanford experts and resources.
Funding Information
- A stipend of $95,000, plus housing supplement to help with rent.

Expectations
- Being a JSK Fellow is a full-time commitment. You will receive a monthly check, health insurance for you and your dependents, and be asked to forgo other professional work to focus on the fellowship experience.
- You will be expected to:
- Be in residence at Stanford during the academic year, from September to June
- Dedicate yourself full-time to the fellowship
- Attend weekly meetings with your cohort and biweekly meetings with your adviser as well as other occasional JSK events
- Publicly share your work and insights throughout the year
- Work collaboratively with people who offer a range of ideas, experiences and perspectives.
Eligibility Criteria
- U.S. and international journalists with digital-native and legacy news organizations, independent journalists, journalism entrepreneurs and journalism innovators.
- Applicants need to have at least five years of full-time professional work experience. They do not require applicants to have a college degree.
- They generally do not accept applications from people working in public information or public relations jobs, for trade and house newsletters or magazines, for government agencies, or in academic positions.
- The fellowship does not fund or support book projects or reporting projects, and they are not a business accelerator.
- They expect JSK Fellows to be proficient in written and spoken English.

- International applications must be submitted by 1 p.m. PST on Wednesday, Dec 6, 2023.
- U.S. applications must be submitted by 1 p.m. PST on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024.
