Deadline: 31 July 2024
Do you and your newsroom want money, training, and support to do meaningful reporting on government and democracy beyond Election Day? Do you want to enhance your solutions journalism skills and utilize data reporting to create a deeper impact? Then SJN’s Building Democracy Fellowship is for you.
SJN ask you to dedicate one reporter and one editor to the project and commit to utilizing what you learn in the training to produce at least two solutions stories over the course of the fellowship.
The Solutions Journalism Network is seeking 15 U.S.-based newsrooms that are up to the challenge of rethinking how and why they cover government and democracy, expanding the vital coverage of what’s going wrong with newsworthy stories highlighting efforts that are going right, and what communities can learn from them.
Funding Information
- Selected newsrooms will receive a $10,000 stipend, training from leading experts, and mentorship and support from SJN staff and their peers. The program will run from September 2024 to June 2025.
Who can apply?
- US-based newsrooms that can commit at least one reporter and editor to participate fully in fellowship programming. They’ll give preference to news organizations that want to cover the government’s large and important infrastructure investments through a solutions lens. And they’ll also give preference to newsrooms that serve communities where civic participation is low, as shown (as a proxy) by low voter participation. Newsrooms serving historically excluded communities are strongly encouraged to apply, as are those who have been part of the earlier democracy initiatives. They see this initiative as an extension of that work.
- This program is for US-based newsrooms, and is not open for freelance journalists.
- They require at least two people (a reporter and editor) to participate in every workshop, but they encourage you to bring as many people as you’d like, especially those who are directly involved in your government and democracy coverage.
