Cokie Roberts Fellowship for Women’s History (United States)

The National Archives Foundation launched a new research fund to honor Cokie Roberts, who shed light on the stories of countless women in U.S. history that were previously unknown to the public. She showed how these lives had an impact on our country’s narrative and added to the rich heritage of our nation. Just as her prose and spirited discussions brought moments in history to new audiences, the Cokie Roberts Fellowship for Women’s History seeks to encourage the next generation of historians, journalists and authors to continue this legacy.

Benefits

• Benefits of this paid, short-term research fellowship include:
  • Up to $12,500 for one to three fellowships.
  • On-site research training by a National Archives staff archivist;
  • Meetings with the Archivist of the United States and Deputy Archivist of the United States;
  • Meeting with other National Archives staff related to the research topic;
  • Being featured in a NARA/NAF public program;
  • Being interviewed for a NARA news article.

Duration

• The fellowship period will run from August 1, 2025 through August 31, 2026.

Eligibility criteria

• Applicants must be emerging or established historians, journalists, authors, or graduate students with proven writing skills, a demonstrated passion for women’s history, and the ability to perform in-person research at a National Archives facility.
• Applicants can be based anywhere in the U.S.

Application Requirements

• Applications require written responses to project proposal questions, a resume/CV (three pages maximum), one (1) letter of recommendation, and three (3) samples of work.
• Samples can be submitted as pdf or word file formats and should be no more than ten (10) pages each.
• Selected samples are up to the discretion of the applicant, but samples from public press outlets are preferred.
