Ernst Cramer & Teddy Kollek Fellowship – Germany and Israel

IJP is doing this in cooperation with governmental institutions, foundations and sponsors in Germany and Israel. At the same time, the fellowship is being offered to journalists in Germany, who can apply to spend a two-month period in Israel.

The fellowship is part of the Middle East Fellowship of the IJP. The fellowships for journalists from Germany and Israel are named in honor of the late journalist Ernst Cramer and the former mayor of Jerusalem Teddy Kollek and their exemplary dedication to the intensification of German-Israeli relations.

The Ernst Cramer & Teddy Kollek Programme was established in 2004 after a series of popular alumni research tours to Israel and Lebanon. It is named after the German journalist Ernst Cramer (1913 – 2010) and the former mayor of Jerusalem Teddy Kollek (1911 – 2007). Both had worked with great passion for reconciliation between Israel and Germany.

Within the framework of the scholarship programme, the IJP wants to contribute to an intensive dialogue between the media in a region particularly affected by conflict and at the same time invite journalists from the Middle East to exchange with their German colleagues. This is done in cooperation with state institutions, foundations and sponsors in Germany and Israel. The fellowship is simultaneously announced for journalists in Germany who can apply for a two-month stay in Israel. Since 2005, Lebanon, Syria and Palestine have been included in the programme, with Jordan and Egypt joining in 2006. Currently, up to five journalists from these participating countries are invited to Germany each year; the same number of German journalists are sent to the Middle East.

Objectives

• The fellowship is intended to enable young journalists to familiarize themselves with the political issues in Germany at an early stage of their career. This will raise awareness of aspects of German-Israeli relations in future multipliers and will give them a personal insight into mentality, culture and everyday life in Germany and the European Union.
• The practical part of the fellowship ensures contact with colleagues in the region, and it is hoped this contact will be maintained in future years. This is also the purpose of the future alumni association of former grant holders and of an annual alumni reunion in Berlin.

Funding Information

• The fellowship carries a grant of 4,000 Euro per person. This sum is intended to cover a large proportion of the travel costs, board and lodging. Fellows are expected to contribute a certain amount themselves. There will be no payment for the individual’s work on location as a journalist.

Duration of Fellowship

• The fellowship begins with an introductory event from October 24 – 26, 2024 in Berlin together with the German fellows. This is followed by a German language course and the fellowship lasting at least two months with a German media outlet.

Eligibility Criteria

• Applications may be submitted by any Israeli citizen aged 21 or over who is working as a regular employee, trainee or journalist for Israeli or Arab media. At least two candidates from Germany and two from Israel will be selected. The maximum age is 37 years.
