Are you a journalist who is keen to have their voice heard on human rights in Europe? Are you interested in the protection and promotion of human rights and in learning more about the rule of law in the European Union? Then this opportunity could be for you!
The FOCUS Fellowship, is looking for 28 journalists to participate in Media Fellowships aimed at producing engaging, human-centric, multimedia-stories linked to the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
FOCUS is a project run by European civil society organizations that seeks to build public awareness of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and its value, and the capacity for its broader application in day-to-day life. Each of the Media Fellowships will explore a topic that is central to the Charter: (1) Equality, (2) Work, (3) Freedom, (4) Youth.
Fellows will attend online seminars and trainings as well as participate in an online pop-up newsroom as they work on a story of their choice. Resulting stories will be published in the form of (1) a digital publication, (2) a print magazine, and (3) exhibited in an in-person launch event bringing all fellows together with members of the public in early 2026.
What they Offer?
- Receive a grant payment of €1600 to help them produce their story
- Participate in an online pop-up newsroom introducing the Charter and training sessions on methods and skills for developing human interest and impactful stories
- Receive editorial support from Are We Europe while developing their story
- Have their stories published in the form of (1) a transmedia publication, (2) a print magazine
- Exhibit their story in an in-person launch event for the publications
- Take part in the final event where they will meet all other fellows as well as be able to present their work to members of the public.
- The fellowships, lasting around 4 months, will take place between September 2024 and September 2025.
Eligibility Criteria
- Participants must be aged between 18-34.
- They are keen to showcase the voices of those who are less represented in the European media landscape. They strongly encourage people from diverse migration backgrounds, genders and sexual orientations to apply.
- Participants must have the right to live and work in one of the 27 EU member states.
