Deadline: 6 October 2023
The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art is offering Publication Grants to publishers, institutions and/or authors to offset costs incurred in producing works of scholarship in print or in other media.
They promote activities that enhance and expand knowledge of British art and architecture. As an institution, they pledge themselves to ensuring that the histories of British art are enriched and made more relevant to a broader range of people in the future.
The funding programme supports research, educational activities and the dissemination of knowledge in the fields of British art and architectural history, from the medieval period to the present day and across the spectrum of relevant geographical and cultural contexts. The remit is broadly defined and adapts as the interests of those working in the field change. It encompasses art made in Britain or by British artists, but is not solely limited to art made, or artists from, within the geographical boundaries of the British isles. Rather they understand the field of British art studies to encompass a broad range of subjects and topics related to the artistic and cultural histories of Britain, past and present.
Scope
- Publication Grants are intended to make possible publications and articles on the subject of British art and architecture which would otherwise not appear, or which would appear in reduced specification.
Funding Information
- Joint applications from authors and publishers may be considered for a maximum of ÂŁ10,000 (ÂŁ7,000 towards production costs and ÂŁ3,000 towards the reproduction costs incurred by the author) with the award being paid in a lump sum to the publisher.
- Alternatively, a publisher may apply separately for publishing costs of up to ÂŁ7,000 or an author may apply separately for costs concerning image reproductions of up to ÂŁ3,000. Only one grant application can be made per publication.
Eligibility Criteria
- The PMC particularly welcomes applications from those who are under-represented within the academic field of the humanities in the UK.
- They do not offer grants and fellowships in field archaeology, the current practice of architecture or the performing arts. Applications in the fields of photography, performance, film and digital media will need to demonstrate their relevance to British art studies.
- Applications will be considered for both long- (monographs, catalogues, edited volumes) and short-form (articles) texts. Applications to support the publication of exhibition catalogues are also accepted.
- Publication projects should be ready to go to press or appear online within two years from January 2024. The Centre does not make any retrospective awards for books already published nor will it accept applications for funding for books due to be published before the end of 2023.
- The Publication grants are intended to support the author and/or publisher production costs. Fees related to open access publications are not eligible under this programme of funding.
Requirements
- A copy of the published work must be sent to the Paul Mellon Centre on completion.
- The PMC must be acknowledged within the published work and guidelines on this will be provided to all successful applicants.
