The Scripps Howard Fund is offering journalism grants to universities and nonprofits that help increase diversity and inclusion in the industry.
The Scripps Howard Fund grants support journalism education by giving students the tools and resources necessary to produce impactful work.
Diversity and Inclusion in journalism grants
- The Scripps Howard Fund is seeking innovative ideas to get post-secondary students from diverse backgrounds invested in journalism and foster environments where all journalism students can actively participate and feel welcome.
- Diverse backgrounds include but are not limited to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, military background and or membership in another group that is under-represented in journalism.
Purposes
- The purpose of these grants is to use experiential learning to:
- Advance equity, diversity and inclusion in student media, journalism education and the journalism pipeline while providing access to mentors and networks.
- Prepare students for professional and public challenges and pressures they may face as journalists of color or members of other under-represented groups.
- Foster connections and understanding between students from various backgrounds and institutions and equip students to deliver inclusive journalism that ensures all voices in a community are represented.
- Proposals may address any of these purposes or a combination of them.
Funding Information
- Universities and nonprofit organizations can apply for one-time grants of up to $30,000 to address this challenge in a way that begins a new program or grows/shapes a specific existing project.
Eligibility Criteria
- Universities and 501(c)3 organizations based in the United States are eligible to apply. Organizations that have fiscal sponsors that are 501(c)3 nonprofits are also eligible.
- Internship programs are not eligible.
- partnerships are welcomed
- Existing programs can qualify for this grant – if the program can clearly demonstrate how the grant dollars would be used to expand.
- Special consideration will be given to proposals that offer experiential learning as an element of the project.
