Are you a journalist interested in exploring the link between climate change and gender-based violence (GBV) in northern Uganda? Do you want to investigate how climate change affects the livelihoods and food security of smallholder farmers in the region? Do you have a passion for telling stories that can raise awareness and inspire action on these pressing issues? If yes, then you are invited to apply for this reporting grant.
With support from the American Jewish World Service (AJWS), NUMEC is offering a reporting grant to 5 journalists who will produce and publish high-quality stories on the theme of climate change and GBV in northern Uganda. The stories should highlight the causes, consequences, and solutions to the challenges faced by the communities, especially women and girls, who are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and GBV.
The stories should also showcase the adaptation strategies used by smallholder farmers to cope with the effects of climate change on their agricultural production and food security. The stories should be based on original research, data analysis, and field reporting, and should adhere to the principles of accuracy, balance, and fairness.
Who can apply?
- The reporting grant is open to journalists working for print, broadcast, or online media outlets in Uganda.
- The journalists should have at least two years of experience in reporting on issues related to climate change, GBV, agriculture, or human rights.
- The journalists should also have a good command of English and/or the local languages spoken in northern Uganda.
Selection Criteria
- The applications will be reviewed by a panel of experts from NUMEC and its partners, who will select the best proposals based on the relevance, originality, feasibility, and potential impact of the stories. The selected journalists will be notified by February 23, 2024, and will receive the reporting grant upon signing a contract with NUMEC.
- The journalists will be expected to complete and submit their stories by March 22, 2024, and to participate in a feedback and mentoring session with NUMEC and its partners. The stories will be published or broadcast by the journalists’ media outlets, as well as by NUMEC and its partners, with due credit and recognition.
- They look forward to receiving your applications and supporting your journalistic endeavors. Together, they can make a difference by informing, educating, and engaging the public on the issues of climate change and GBV in northern Uganda.
