The Cláudio Weber Abramo Data Journalism Award is an initiative that aims to encourage excellence in the use of data by journalists to report, analyze and investigate issues that affect Brazilian society.
Objectives
- Encourage the use of data in its different formats (tabular data, maps, network analysis, natural language processing, etc.) to address topics of high social relevance;
- Stimulate the production and use of open data on topics of public interest in journalism;
- Support transparency and open data initiatives produced by or with potential use for Brazilian journalism;
- Inspire students and journalists to work with data in their investigations, and;
- Recognize outstanding professionals and work in the field of data journalism.
Categories
- Preview
- Data is beautiful! We will award the best data visualization journalism in Brazil. Here, what matters is presentation and communication skills, as well as good practices in information design and usability.
- Open data
- Excellent work thanks to its transparency practices, use of the Access to Information Law, structuring and making available open data, documentation of methodology or publication of open source software.
- Investigation
- Unprecedented discoveries and new insights gained through innovative data analysis or unprecedented collections. It is looking for high-impact social work that has used data to shed light on topics of public interest.
- Innovation and experimentation
- Innovative data journalism work that breaks away from the routine and brings elements of experimentation. Innovation here is not limited to the use of new technologies, but can also involve methodologies and formats.
Award Information
- Each winning project will receive the gross amount of R$2,500.00 (two thousand and five hundred reais).
Eligibility Criteria
- Participation in the Award is open to:
- individuals over 18 years of age, and;
- collectives involving more than one person, formalized or not, or civil society organizations and impact businesses that work in journalistic production.
- In the case of collectives, the registration must be made by a person responsible for the work, who must include the other members and organizations in the appropriate field.
- Works produced by press offices, sponsored content works (branded content) financed by commercial organizations or works with direct participation of members of the jury, the executive team or the OKBR Governance Board in the team are not eligible.
- To participate, you must meet the requirements below:
- Have published work of a journalistic nature (reports, platforms, journalistic products or with potential use in journalism) in any media (digital, print, TV, radio) between October 9, 2023 and September 1,2024;
- Have an employment relationship or formal authorization from the organization that published the content entered in the award, at the time of registration;
- Submit the application without any type of content access block. If there is any type of content access block, you will need to provide your access credentials on the application form;
- Not participate in the jury or hold positions of any nature in the organizations that make up the Organizing Committee, as set out in article 1 of these Regulations;
- Works in different formats are accepted, such as: online or printed publications; reports for television or radio; hot sites and web platforms; videos or other physical or virtual media, as long as access to the work is public, whether free or not.
- Each applicant may submit up to three works per category, and the same work may not be submitted in more than one category. If the same work is submitted in different categories or more than three projects are submitted per category, only the most recent submissions will be taken into account.
- Sole Paragraph. In the case of works registered more than once in the same category, the most recent submission will be considered, provided that it meets the eligibility requirements.
- After confirmation of submission, changes to registration data will not be accepted.
- Basic information about the registered works (such as title, link, abstract, image and others) will be made publicly available by the Organizing Committee, as a table and/or a gallery of registered works. Personal information, such as e-mail and telephone numbers of those responsible for the registration, will not be published.
