U.S. Embassy Gaborone of the U.S. Department of State announces a full and open competition for organizations to submit proposals to carry out a program to strengthen the capacity, sustainability, and professional community of practice of Botswana’s media institutions while building relationships, resourcing opportunities, and professional linkages with U.S.-based counterparts.
Program Objectives
- Free, independent, and ethically practiced journalism serves a vital function in any healthy democratic society. The objective of this funding opportunity is to enhance Botswana-based media institutions ability further a free, healthy, and independent media environment while opening new potential opportunities with counterparts in the robust U.S. media space.

Eligible Activities
- The proposed project includes the following activities:
- Research, develop, and execute an initiative that will foster enhanced partnership, collaboration/content-sharing, and resourcing opportunities between Botswana-based media institutions and U.S.-based counterparts such as education institutions, government broadcasting corporations, wire services, and private digital, print, TV, and radio organizations. This activity may include travel to the U.S. to facilitate fact-finding, conference attendance, and networking.
- Facilitate a training workshop and mentorship program for civil society organizations and media institutions that better equip them to advocate on issues related to information access, journalists’ rights, and freedom of expression issues.
- Establish a sustainable inducement to encourage the practice of outstanding journalism or advocacy in the form of a grant or award program.

Eligibility Criteria
- The following organizations are eligible to apply:
- Only Botswana-based not-for-profit organizations, including think tanks and civil society/non-governmental organizations.
- Individual Botswana citizens living in Botswana.
- Botswana based profit making Organizations.
