The Gabo Foundation and the Hay Festival Cartagena de Indias are seeking applications for its Michael Jacobs Travel Writing Scholarship.
This year, a new edition of the call for applications is being opened, which is funded by the Michael Jacobs Foundation for Travel Writing, a non-profit organization created by Michael’s widow and brother to honor his legacy and promote travel writing in Spain and Latin America.
Funding Information
- The sum of 10,000 dollars as an incentive to finance the research and writing of their article or book. The amount includes the taxes to be paid by the beneficiary and the convening institutions.
- The scholarship will be awarded as follows: half ($5,000) when the winner is announced and the second half ($5,000) when the project is completed and delivered to the publisher for publication.
- The winner will be invited to serve as a jury member for the next edition of the Michael Jacobs Travel Writing Scholarship.
Eligibility Criteria
- The scholarship, which is now in its eleventh edition and aims to encourage travel writing or travel article about Latin America or Spain, to be published in Spanish or English.
- The jury will take into account the narrative quality and journalistic depth of the projects when choosing the winner.
Application Requirements
- Make a detailed presentation of the project (article or book) that includes: description of the project, and a fragment of the work with a minimum of 1,500 words in length to evaluate the author’s narrative ability.
- Submit an autobiography of no more than 500 words (in Spanish or English) describing your experience as a travel journalist and your motivation for applying for the scholarship. Conventional CVs or resumes will not be considered.
- A text published by the author in a print or digital medium (in Spanish or English). The candidate must have at least one article or book published at the time of submitting the application.
- The submitted works must address travel journalism in Latin America or Spain, the language of the work may be Spanish or English, and journalists or writers of any nationality may apply.
