The International AIDS Society (IAS) Media Scholarship Programme is open to journalists/media specialists/online content creators.
AIDS 2024, the 25th International AIDS Conference, will take place in Munich, Germany, and virtually from 22 to 26 July 2024. The AIDS 2024 Media Scholarship Programme provides financial assistance to attend AIDS 2024. The scholarship also supports attendance of the AIDS 2024 pre-conferences, which take place on 21 and 22 July in the conference venue.
Categories
- The following three categories are:
- Category 1
- Journalists, photographers and videographers who are either employees of or on assignment for a recognized print, radio, broadcast or online consumer, medical, community-based or HIV service organization-sponsored media outlet.
- Category 2
- Public-facing communications professionals attached to a recognized non-profit HIV research, advocacy or policy organization and whose work is directly related to supporting media coverage of presentations at AIDS 2024. These applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and cannot exceed three applications per organization. The organization will not be able to submit further applications once three applications have been submitted and approved.
- Category 3
- Social media influencers who make a significant contribution to the field of HIV and/or broader public health or have strong connections with key populations and have a following of over 50,000 on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok or YouTube.
- Category 1
What does the media scholarship provide?
- Recipients of the IAS Media Scholarship will receive
- Travel support (pre-paid economy class return ticket from the nearest international airport in your country of residence) for the dates of the conference and pre-conferences.
- Accommodation (single room in a budget hotel), for the duration of the conference and pre-meetings.
- Daily living allowance for the duration of the conference and pre-conferences.
Formats
- Media representatives can choose between two registration formats:
- In-person and virtual registration
- In-person access to all conference sessions, satellite sessions, the poster exhibition, the exhibition, the Global Village, pre-conferences, the media centre and hybrid press conferences.
- Online access to all conference sessions, satellite sessions and pre-conferences streamed live on the virtual platform, session recordings and on-demand content, the virtual exhibition, e-posters, the virtual Global Village, the virtual media centre and press conferences throughout the conference and after.
- Virtual registration
- Online access to all conference sessions, satellite sessions and pre-conferences streamed live on the virtual platform, session recordings and on-demand content, the virtual exhibition, e-posters, the virtual Global Village, the virtual media centre and press conferences throughout the conference and after.
- In-person and virtual registration
Eligibility Criteria
- Priority will be given to media scholarship applicants who:
- Work for national or international top-tier media outlets with a wide regional, national or international reach, regardless of the medium.
- Have a proven history of covering HIV and/or infectious diseases. Scientific and broader reporting are both encouraged.
- Are based in resource-limited settings or represent target countries/regions of interest. This includes South and Southeast Asia; Latin America and the Caribbean; the Middle East and North Africa; central, eastern, western and southern Africa; and eastern Europe and central Asia.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to reporting on HIV and/or infectious diseases. Preference will be given to individuals representing outlets that have a proven background in reporting on global health topics, infectious diseases and HIV more specifically.
- Are part of key populations or living with HIV.
Requirements
- Media scholarship recipients must agree to be in Munich and attend the full duration of AIDS 2024 and the pre-meetings from 20 to 26 July, inclusive, and attend and participate in all media scholarship programme activities.
- Media scholarship recipients are responsible for obtaining a visa to enter Germany, as well as any additional travel visas, if needed. If the applicant is denied a travel visa, the media scholarship will be switched to virtual attendance.
