The “Governance, Peace and Stability” project funded by the French Development Agency, the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) is proposing to train 20 Comorian journalists in professional coverage of the electoral process in the Comoros from 27 November to December 1, 2023.
Objectives
- This activity aims to strengthen the capacities of journalists to cover the electoral process.
- More specifically, this training will aim to:
- Improve the understanding, by journalists, of the functioning of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) of the Union of the Comoros;
- Strengthen the capacity to cover the electoral process through ethical approach on the part of journalists;
- Facilitate collaboration between media and CENI in order to improve the quality of information aimed at populations through professional journalistic coverage.
- Understand the functioning of an electoral charter within the framework of this professional journalistic coverage.
Progress of the activity
- The program is broken down into three main components over 5 days
- Day 1: Presentation of electoral laws, the functioning of the Comoros CENI and an overview of the electoral process.
- Day 2: Presentation of the rules of journalistic ethics and professional conduct, the duties and rights of journalists, the angles of coverage of the electoral process with examples and practical cases based on archives of electoral coverage.
- Day 3: Visit to the CENI of the Comoros followed by journalistic exercises related to this visit.
- Days 4 and 5: practical work.
Eligibility Criteria
- Journalists invited to submit their candidacy must come from a media holding a local operating permit, from both the public and private sectors. A fair distribution of participants (radio, television, online media) will be sought in the selection.
- The journalist must:
- Have the desire to strengthen their journalistic skills in covering news crisis/conflict situations;
- Commit to following all of the training;
- Have a good command of the French language;
- Have obtained written authorization from management to follow the training.
- The presentation of female candidates is very strongly encouraged.
