The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York, in partnership with the Google News Initiative are accepting submissions for the Emerging News Leadership Program to train a cohort of local and rural news leaders in everything they need to know to run a sustainable news organization.
This 6-month online, tuition-free training program prepares a diverse group of rural and local media leaders to run sustainable news organizations by focusing on advanced digital skills, the business of journalism, management and leadership.
Duration
- The program will run from April 9 to June 18, 2024, then they will take a break for the summer, and resume classes from September 3 to November 19, 2024.
Outcomes
- Participants in the Emerging News Leadership Program will:
- Gain confidence in their leadership and strategy skills
- Refine their understanding of and appreciation for the new business landscape of journalism
- Upgrade their digital skills and explore emerging technologies
- Learn sound communication and people management techniques to lead a newsroom
- Receive ongoing support in their learning journey and career development
Eligibility Criteria
- They are looking for local and rural media leaders who are passionate about driving change and sustainability in service to their audience, whether they work in legacy news operations or digital start-ups, for-profit or non-profit, covering general news or niche interests.
- The program is targeting mid-level to top-level management, including publishers, founders, editors, managers, and others in editorial, business or tech within local and rural organizations. They will also consider emerging leaders who are poised to move into leadership roles.
- They encourage journalists from diverse backgrounds and experience to apply to this inclusive program.
- They encourage publishers, founders, editors, managers and others from local and rural news organizations in the United States and abroad to apply.
