“Effective Reporting on Migration” Capacity-building Action Project for Journalists

Deadline: 15 September 2023

The Permanent Conference of the Mediterranean Audiovisual Operators (COPEAM) is seeking applications for the Capacity-building Action Project for Journalists in the framework of the EU co-funded project E³J – European Excellence Exchange in Journalism (Creative Europe Programme – CREA).

E³J project aims to unleash the combined potential of European values and cross-border collaboration for better journalism and a healthier information space. With migration being a highly technical, debated and sensitive subject across Europe, which goes beyond mere reporting on figures, and given the media’s fundamental role in shaping narratives and forming public opinion, it is paramount that journalists have the necessary knowledge and skills to report about such topic in an evidence and rights-based manner.

Within E³J project, COPEAM is in charge of organizing 2 international trainings for journalists on the topic “Effective Reporting on Migration”. The trainings – taking place both online and in person – are intended to contribute to enhancing quality of the media coverage of migration, by providing the latest available information and expertise in this field.

The training will consist in two inter-connected parts:

  • Preliminary Session – on-line, October 2023
    • An online preliminary session will be held at the end of October 2023 (exact dates tbc), consisting of a short introductory webinar with the lead expert + 4 self-guided modules on the training topics. Both activities will be in English.
    • This part of the training will provide participants with a common background about labour migration, with a specific focus on decent work deficits in agriculture + a round-table discussion between the attending beneficiaries.
      • Module 1: Introduction to the key concepts of migration;
      • Module 2: Overview of labour migration reporting;
      • Module 3: Focus on decent work deficits in agriculture;
      • Module 4: Reporting forced labour and human trafficking.
  • “Effective Reporting on Migration” Workshop – Madrid, 13-14-15 November 2023
    • An in-person workshop will be organized in November 2023 in Madrid, hosted by the Spanish public broadcaster RTVE (Arrival: Nov. 12).
    • The workshop will deal with reporting labour migration, with particular reference to issues related to low-paid labour migration in the agricultural sector and related issues: recruitment, decent work, labour rights, and seasonal work.
    • The detailed training programme will follow.
      • A certificate of attendance signed by COPEAM and the Lead Expert will be delivered after the activity.

Expected Results

  • Beneficiaries will enhance their general knowledge about migration related topics and improve their ability to effectively report on these issues.
  • Beneficiaries will improve their specific knowledge about labour migration and its socio-economic and demographic impact in Europe.
  • Beneficiaries will acquire proper tools to access reliable sources and data on migration, as well as related available collaborative platforms.
  • A network of experienced international journalists will be established and will be able to collaborate by sharing information and working methods.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must meet the following criteria:
    • Being professional journalists (TV/Radio/Press/Online/Photojournalist/Freelance);
    • Having a proven prior experience in covering migration-related issues;
    • Having a working proficiency in English;
    • The participation is free of charge and open to a limited number of 20 professional journalists coming from the EU and other eligible countries.
