Call for Entries: Fritt Ord Fund (Norway)

Deadline: 3 January 2025

The Fritt Ord awards support for projects that help promote freedom of expression, public discourse, art and culture.

The measures supported should contribute to the common good and be available to the public.

Categories

  • Events: Fritt Ord supports a number of seminars, conferences, festivals, film screenings and other types of events.
  • Books: Fritt Ord primarily supports manuscript development. The foundation focuses on non-fiction publications, and usually rejects applications for support for novels, self-help books, handbooks, reports and publications related to specific campaigns.
  • Media and Journalism: It is possible to apply to Fritt Ord for support inter alia for article production, journals, podcasts, radio productions, reporting excursions and TV productions.
  • Films: It is possible to apply to Fritt Ord for funding for the development and production of documentary films.
  • Dramatic Art: It is possible to apply to Fritt Ord for funding for script development for theatre performances and the production of theatre performances.
  • Photography: Fritt Ord funds photo projects, photojournalism, photo exhibitions and photo-books.
  • Podcasts: It is possible to apply to Fritt Ord for funding for podcast productions. They give priority to documentary podcasts and current events podcasts with well-defined themes – Fritt Ord does not fund fiction podcasts.
  • Art Projects: It is possible to apply to Fritt Ord for funding for the production of art projects, art films, exhibitions and catalogues.
  • Exhibitions: Fritt Ord funds exhibitions at cultural institutions, museums and other venues.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Fritt Ord mainly funds projects in Norway (or with ties to Norway). Under certain circumstances, however, the Foundation can help promote freedom of expression in other countries. While Fritt Ord can provide support multi-year projects, it ordinarily awards funding for just one year at a time.

Application Requirements

  • To apply for support from Fritt Ord, you must fill in a short application form and attach a detailed project description, a budget and financing plan, CV and any other necessary information. The project description is the most important document.
  • The digital form is built up with a step-by-step review of the fields you must fill in to be able to apply. You have the option to start on a form and save it temporarily, and then retrieve it again when you log in on a later occasion. It is recommended that you have all relevant information ready before you start filling in the application form. In addition, all documents to be uploaded should be completed. Project description and budget must be uploaded separately, and should therefore be split so that they are in separate documents.
  • It is not possible to submit the application without the following files attached:
    • Project description: a precise and clear description of the project. This should be between two and eight pages.
    • Budget and financing plan: overview showing the project’s costs, self-financing, the project’s estimated income, other support that has been promised and other applications that have been sent but not yet answered.
  • In addition, applicants can also upload other documents that are relevant to the processing of the application:
    • CV: a curriculum vitae (CV) is a resumĂ© containing concise information about the qualifications of an individual or group involved in the project. Where several people are involved, CVs should be collected in one single file.
    • Other attachments: This depends on the type of project you are applying for support for, but extra attachments can be, for example, excerpts from the script limited to 1-2 chapters, letter of intent with a publisher for book publication, a screening agreement with a TV channel, press clippings or supporting statements.
  • In the application form itself, you are asked to fill in the following fields:
    • Brief description of the project.
    • What the amount of support is specifically to be used for.
    • Progress plan, e.g. event date, duration, number of monthly works etc.
    • These fields must be filled in, even if the points are also explained in the project description. Please note that the fields in the form are limited to 500 characters. Feel free to use the entire field.
